Why You Should Wear an Athletic Mouthguard

null
According to the National Youth Sports Foundation for the Prevention of Athletic injuries, athletes have a 10% chance of suffering an injury to the mouth in just a single sports season. Major studies have also shown that athletes who wear custom mouthguards are at a significantly lower risk of sustaining a mouth injury than those who do not. It’s a no brainer— athletes should protect their mouths from injury.

Even with research that backs up the claims about the importance of mouthguards, there are far too many sports that do not require
mouthguards as a safety tool. This puts young athletes at risk for unpleasant injuries like fractured teeth, cut lips, jaw injuries, and other facial injuries.

  • How Mouthguards Work

Mouthguards are a form of protection that are worn over the user’s teeth. They’re often molded to fit the user’s teeth, similar to a retainer but made of a softer material. These guards help protect athletes from forceful hits to the face. They are specifically designed to prevent injuries such as cut lips, knocked out teeth, or broken jaws. Mouthguards are typically made of a flexible material that, when impacted, slow down the force transmitted from a hard hit or blow during a game or practice. Rather than the force being applied to one area of the mouth, thus creating an even harder hit, it’s more evenly distributed throughout the mouth which reduces it by nearly ¼ the original force (source: www.opro.com.)

  • Mouthguard Tips

The bottom line is this: the best way to protect your mouth during athletic performance is with a custom fit mouth guard.

  • Mouthguard Replacement

Ideally, mouthguards should be replaced after each season due to the fact that they can get worn down and become less effective for safety.

Types of Mouthguards

null
There are three different types of mouthguards. While some provide more protection than others, if your budget is limited, any mouth guard is better than no mouth guard. However, it is important to make sure it is tear-resistant and comfortable to wear. The three main types of mouth guards are as follows:
null
Custom-Made Mouthguards
Custom-made mouthguards are designed for the individual user. Typically, this type of mouthguard is fit and molded at a professional dental office. These will most likely give athletes the highest level of comfort and protection. Because of this, however, they are also typically the most expensive type of mouthguard.
null
Boil and Bite Mouthguards
Boil and bite mouthguards are pre-formed, but they can be altered to better fit the user’s mouth by being soaked in boiling water. The warm water softens the material enough for the athlete to bite the mouth guard so that it becomes more customized to that individual person. This type of guard is not quite as protective as custom-made mouth guards, but provides a higher level of safety than stock mouth guards do.
null
Stock Mouthguards
Stock mouthguards are the cheapest type of guard, but are the most uncomfortable. Since they are completely pre-made and cannot be altered, they often will not fit the athlete very well and can cause discomfort during practice or games.
